WWSYO 2025-2026 Season

Free

with Bruce Walker

Calendar Sep 24, 2025 at 6:30 pm

The Walla Walla Symphony Youth Orchestra (WWSYO) provides a unique opportunity to rehearse and perform in a full symphonic ensemble with strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Musicians rehearse weekly with director Bruce Walker and perform 2–3 concerts each year.

Fall Session Schedule

  • Wednesday evenings, 6:30–8:15 PM
  • September 24 - January 21
  • Occasionally rehearsals will be moved to Monday evenings at the same time, to avoid conflicts with the WWPS Music Department concert calendar
  • You can Subscribe to the WWSYO Google Calendar for a full list of rehearsals and concerts, or view online without subscribing here.

Location

  • Pioneer Middle School orchestra room.
  • Special thanks to Ms. Woods for hosting us in the space, and to Ms. Jillson for use of the percussion instruments!
  • Dress Rehearsal and Concert will be held at the WWCC Performing Arts Center.

Eligibility

  • Designed for musicians in grades 8–12; exceptions can be made for younger students ready for the challenge of an advanced ensemble!
  • To participate in WWSYO, students must also be enrolled in their school’s music ensemble, if one is offered. If instruction on your primary instrument is not available at your school, we encourage you to participate in another ensemble within your school’s music program.
  • Students who are homeschooled full-time, or who are enrolled full-time in Running Start, the Opportunity Program, or online school (and do not participate in any other school programs), are strongly encouraged—but not required—to participate in a school music program.
  • Participants must attend all rehearsals. Two excused absences are permitted per Session. Students missing more than two rehearsals may be asked to demonstrate their handle on materials and/or have a conversation with Mr. Walker about their future availability.
  • Please contact us if you’re unsure about your eligibility.

Auditions

  • Auditions are a casual part of the program, meant to help Director Bruce Walker learn more about each musician’s skill set and to assist with part assignments when there is more than one part per instrument. Students are welcome to attend rehearsals before completing an audition if they would like to “try it out first.”
  • Audition Material: Prepare 2–5 minutes of music that demonstrates both technical and lyrical ability on your instrument.
  • Auditions will be accepted throughout September and October for the Fall session. All students, including returning members, must audition each year. When registering for WWSYO, you will choose between a Virtual or Live Audition:
  • Virtual Auditions: Record your audition on a phone, tablet, or other device. You’ll receive a link to submit your video in an email confirmation after you've submitted your registration. Videos may be submitted anytime between registration and September 30.
  • In-Person Auditions: Request a live audition with Bruce Walker when you register. These will be scheduled after rehearsals during the month of October.

Communication

  • We send weekly emails to all participants and their parents/guardians with rehearsal details, extra musical opportunities, free tickets to Walla Walla Symphony events, and other announcements.
  • Please provide a working email address when you register. If you’d like to add additional email addresses to the weekly email list, please email emily@wwsymphony.org.

Spring 2026 Session

  • Participants enrolled in the Fall Session will automatically remain enrolled for the Spring Session, which will be held February through May. Students not wishing to continue must contact the Walla Walla Symphony to un-enroll.
  • Schedule and details about the Spring Session will become available by the end of the 2025 Calendar Year.
  • Exciting things are coming this Spring! Stay tuned!

Questions

  • Please direct all questions, as well as any schedule conflicts or absences, to emily@wwsymphony.org.

WWSYO Concerto Competition 2026

Free

with Bruce Walker

Calendar Jan 28, 2026 at 6:30 pm

Walla Walla Symphony Youth Orchestra (WWSYO) Concerto Competition

January 28, 2026, 6-8pm

Location TBA

(Note: Registration will close on Monday, January 12, at 5pm.)

The WWSYO Concerto Competition is an opportunity for our region's up-and-coming musicians to prepare and perform an audition for a panel of professional adjudicators. The competition takes place in Walla Walla, WA. Participants compete in one of two divisions:

Intermediate Division (Up to grade 8), and
  Senior Division (Grades 9-12)

In addition to three monetary prizes, selected participants may be invited to perform with the Walla Walla Symphony Youth Orchestra in concert.

Guidelines and Procedures Checklist:

  • Geographical Limits: The competition is open to residents of Walla Walla and Columbia Counties in Washington, and Umatilla County in Oregon.

  • Membership in the Walla Walla Symphony Youth Orchestra is NOT required. (But we'd love for you to join us!)

  • Instrument Restrictions: WWSYO students are NOT restricted to performing only on the instruments that they play in WWSYO. All instruments and vocal parts are welcome to participate. Participants may also choose to prepare multiple auditions on more than one instrument, if they wish!

  • Audition Time: Each participant will be given up to 12 minutes to audition. These audition slots will be between 6-8pm on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, with the panelists and a live audience present.

  • Choice of Piece
Instrumental participants should prepare a movement of a concerto or similar concert piece.
Singers should prepare an aria or similar selection.
Participants may choose a piece longer than 12 minutes, but must choose which movement or portion to present to the adjudicators to meet the time limit.
We recommend that participants choose a piece written in 1850 or earlier if possible, due to instrumentation considerations and accessibility of parts. Pieces written after 1850 may be accepted but are less likely to meet director's approval for these reasons. Musical selections should have readily available orchestral parts.
We will ask for a publisher or source of these parts during registration, but if you have trouble finding them just let us know, we may be able to help!

  • Piece Pre-Approval: The piece or movement which each participant chooses is subject to the approval of WWSYO Music Director Bruce Walker. Upon submission of each participant’s Registration Form, we will review piece selections and will contact participants if their piece is NOT approved. Email bruce@wwsymphony.org and/or emily@wwsymphony.org if you'd like to know ahead of registering whether your piece will be approved.

  • Piece Memorization: Participants may use sheet music during the audition. Competition winners should be prepared to perform their selections by memory at the Spring Concert.

  • Copies of Music: Participants are responsible for bringing three copies of the music for the adjudicators during the competition. Music can be returned at the end of the performance if requested.

  • Accompanists: Participants may choose to audition either with or without an accompanist. If playing with an accompanist, participants are responsible for arranging and compensating their own accompanists. WWSYO may be able to help participants locate an accompanist if needed. When scheduling audition times, we try to group students together based on the accompanists, i.e. an accompanist performing with four students will play for the students back-to-back to be considerate of the accompanist’s time.

  • DVD submissions and electronic submissions are NOT permitted. The intention of the competition is to provide a live adjudication experience for participants.

  • Competition Day Instructions, including each participant’s audition time, will be emailed at least five days prior to the competition. Please be sure to provide a working email address during registration to ensure that you receive these instructions.

  • Additional Requirements for Winners: If a participant is selected to perform their piece with the Walla Walla Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Music Director may limit the number of movements or total performance time to fit a specific concert program. In addition, only selections with readily available orchestral parts will be programmed for a concert performance. Participants who are selected to perform must be available for the Spring 2026 WWSYO Concert in May 2026 (dates TBA), and for several rehearsals leading up to the concert. Rehearsals are currently on Wednesday evenings between 6:30-8:15 pm in Walla Walla. Rehearsal dates specific to each Concerto will be announced after the competition. If winners choose to perform only on their selection, and not enroll in the ensemble, they will only be required to attend those rehearsals in which that piece is rehearsed. Winners are encouraged to, but not required to, enroll in WWSYO to participate in the other pieces on the program.

To participate, please click "Register" on this page and complete the registration form. Further instructions, including each participant's audition time, will be sent via email to the email address or addresses you provide during registration. Contact emily@wwsymphony.org with any questions.

We look forward to seeing you in January!

(Please Register by Monday, January 12, 2026 to participate!)

Join us for Symphonic Fun this Spring!

Beginning Spring 2026, WWSYO will expand into two complementary ensembles so students can rehearse at the level best suited to their musical growth:

  • WWSYO Crescendo — a youth orchestra for developing musicians.
For players with at least one year of experience on their instruments, ready to grow their skills, build confidence, and deepen their ensemble fundamentals.

  • WWSYO Virtuoso — a youth orchestra for advanced musicians.
For students with strong technical ability and multiple years of ensemble experience, ready for more challenging repertoire and leadership opportunities.

All students register through this form; auditions will be used to determine placement.

Spring Session Schedule

  • Wednesday evenings
  • Crescendo: 5:00-6:00pm at Pioneer Middle School
  • Virtuoso: 6:30–8:15 PM at Pioneer Middle School
  • February 11 - May 13
  • Subscribe to the WWSYO Google Calendar for a full list of rehearsals and concerts, or view the calendar online without subscribing.

WWSYO ensembles will rehearse at the Pioneer Middle School orchestra room. Special thanks to Ms. Woods for hosting us in the space, and to Ms. Jillson for use of the percussion instruments!

Dress Rehearsals and Concerts will be held at the WWCC Performing Arts Center. Special thanks to Rodney Outlaw and the Audio Engineering program for hosting us in the space, and for providing recording services!

Eligibility

Designed for musicians in grades 6–12.

To participate in WWSYO, students must also be enrolled in their school’s music ensemble, if one is offered. If instruction on your primary instrument is not available at your school, we encourage you to participate in another ensemble within your school’s music program.

Students who are homeschooled full-time, or who are enrolled full-time in Running Start, the Opportunity Program, or online school (and do not participate in any other school programs), are strongly encouraged—but not required—to participate in a school music program.

Please contact us if you’re unsure about your eligibility.

Attendance

Participants must attend all rehearsals. Two excused absences are permitted per Session. Students missing more than two rehearsals may be asked to demonstrate their handle on materials and/or have a conversation with Mr. Walker about their future availability.

Auditions

All participants—returning and new—are required to complete an audition for the Spring 2026 Session. Auditions ensure that each musician is placed in the ensemble where they will be most successful and have the best musical experience.

Audition materials for the Spring Session are standardized for all instruments and a rubric will be used to determine placement. Audition materials can be found here:

All auditions will be virtual. After submitting this registration form, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to upload your video recording. If you have any trouble with your video submission, please feel free to email emily@wwsymphony.org.

Recordings may be uploaded anytime between registration and January 26. Auditions will be reviewed by Director Bruce Walker by February 2 , and all registrants will receive their audition results via email by Friday, February 6.

Musicians whose auditions demonstrate their ability to participate in WWSYO will be placed in either:
WWSYO Crescendo (developing musicians), or
WWSYO Virtuoso (advanced musicians)

Any musicians whose auditions demonstrate that they might not be ready to achieve success in either ensemble will be asked to wait and audition again for the next WWSYO Session after some more practice.

Communication

We send weekly emails to all participants and their parents/guardians with rehearsal details, extra musical opportunities, free tickets to Walla Walla Symphony events, and other announcements. Please provide a working email address when you register. If you’d like to add additional email addresses to the weekly email list, please email emily@wwsymphony.org.
